Less is more ... rather than overwhelming you with volumes of travel tips, here is a specific list of exclusive recommendations with Mr & Mrs Crystal's stamp of approval.

In addition to its central location at the top end of La Ramblas, the real treat of 1898 lies inside, where you will be spoilt with the highest level of service and luxury. Rooms are stylish and comfortable, and the oversized rain-showerheads are an indulgence! The wrap-around rooftop terrace is perfectionista, complete with an outdoor swimming pool, steam room, solarium and separate indoor pool. Wash it all down with 1898's signature cocktail - a coconut and chilli mojito.

Hotel Neri

A great example of cool Catalan panache, this small 18th-century palace houses a boutique hotel with 22 striking rooms and a rooftop terrace boasting cathedral views. Nestled in the maze of medieval Barri Gotic, Neri is hard to find but well worth the search. W Barcelona

Seldom does Travel Hedonism recommend a high-rise hotel that is as indiscrete as W Barcelona, which has unilaterally changed the city’s skyline. But the luxury W Barcelona is a rare treat not worth missing. This reflective sail-like tower boasts 473 sleek and sun drenched guestrooms. The hotel’s interior and room design are deliciously in vogue and the public spaces are jaw-droppingly chic - expect a glitzy 26th storey rooftop Eclipse bar for people watching, an infinity-edged pool accompanied by playful music and cocktails, culinary delights at the beachfront restaurant with unparalleled views, and an indulgently meditative Bliss spa. This complete package provides guests with a ‘lifestyle experience’, not just a hotel stay, which makes it stand out almost as much as its design does.

what we think

You may recognise Gaudi’s masterpieces of La Sagrada Familia, Parc Güell, La Pedrera and others from the plethora of photos splashed across travel guides. These colourful images are captivating. However, photos do not evoke the same emotions as actually being in Barcelona, a city with an electric energy - morning, noon and night. Its shopping districts are diverse, combining charm and trend and the small cobblestone streets hide many undiscovered gems. Some of the world’s most imitated tapas bars were created in Barcelona and manage to combine tradition with contemporary design and a hip crowd. The beach is certainly worth discovering, either during the day to soak up the Spanish sun or at night when the marina transforms into a buzz of beach-fronted clubs with famous DJs. Add to this, the funky shopping, hip bars and the emerging luxury boutique hotels – many with rooftop sanctuaries - and you’ll agree that Barcelona is a hedonist’s paradise.
