Less is more ... rather than overwhelming you with volumes of travel tips, here is a specific list of exclusive recommendations with Mr & Mrs Crystal's stamp of approval.

Borchardt Grill Restaurant

Borchardt’s classic, yet trendy bistro serves quality French-German fusion food. With a reputation as a celebrity meeting place, it is extremely popular and definitely worth a visit for an elegant dining experience. For an equally fabulous meal head to Botchart’s spin off, San Nicci, also in Mitte.

Lutter & Wegner

Lutter & Wegner boasts an extensive wine list to accompany the delicious and authentic modern German food. The schnitzel is larger than the plate it is served on, but what’s the hurry? Soak up the casual yet sophisticated atmosphere, enjoy a bottle of flavoursome, textured wine, and before you know it, you’ll be ordering apple strudel for dessert! There are 2 Lutter & Wegner restaurants – Gendarmenmarkt which is more exclusive, and Oranienburger Straße which is more casual.

We’ve scoured East Berlin to find the funkiest Japanese cuisine and we unearthed a hidden Mitte gem. Susuru (meaning ‘slurping’ in Japanese) twists Japanese cuisine beyond sushi and into the realm of a contempo noodle house. At Susuru you will slurp your way through big bowls of steaming udon noodles. Throw in a trendy dining room furnished in mod chic Mitte style and you have a refreshingly cool Japanese haunt. Delicious communal dining vibe.

what we think

After a tumultuous past, this vibrant capital has reclaimed its cool. Don’t be deterred by the crumbling façade of some parts of the city as some of the world’s most progressive and exciting architecture can easily be found. The neighbourhoods are eclectic and it’s not uncommon to see graffiti covered buildings missing walls adjacent to a slick modern development. Maybe it’s an anti-grunge backlash, but in the last few years Berlin designers have been stamping their mark on the city, and everything from the boutiques to the cafes, restaurants, bars and underground clubs are cutting edge and radically cool.
